On 13 October 2019 the congregations of Holland Park, St Mark's Mount Gravatt, Wellers Hill - Tarragindi and Yeronga chose to come together as one congregation, as from 1 January, 2020. This occurred following a two year process of discernment where Uniting Church congregations on Brisbane's southside, were given a chance to discern their futures in terms of faith development, local and missional impact and evangelism.
During this two year period, some of the congregations discerned to continue on as independent congregations, but four congregations chose to come together for the following benefits:
- a shared worship life
- pooling together resources
- explore new missional initiatives
- find new paths for ministry outreach
- work together to bless the emerging generation
The work of discernment was completed under the ministry of our incumbent lead minister, Rev. David Fender, who worked with ministry agents, church councils and leaders across the different communities to listen, pray and discern God's direction for this new and exciting initiative.
Southside Uniting Church meets at four communities, Holland Park - formerly St. David's Holland Park on Logan Road, Mt Gravatt - formerly St. Mark's Mt Gravatt on Springwood St., Tarragindi - formerly Weller's Hill - Tarraginding Uniting Church on Pope St., and Yeronga - formerly Yeronga Uniting Church on Kadumba St. These congregations were officially closed by the Presbytery of South Moreton on Feb 2, 2020, and a new congregation Southside Uniting Church, was birthed at our Yeronga Community on Feb 9 2020. At SSUC, all our Ministry Agents serve the Congregation through the different areas of ministry where they have a calling and conviction to serve in. In this way, they complement their calling to their communities with connection to wider ministry, whether it is in supporting our various communities in areas such as Worship or Children's ministries, or in equipping our communities for greater impact in our region through Spiritual Growth, Outreach or New Mission Initiatives.
In his role as Lead Minister, Rev. David Fender (Top Left) is an interface between the various ministry areas in the life of our church, connecting the areas of Children, Youth and Families, New Mission, Outreach, Pastoral Care and Worship - with the work of our communities. As well as being our Lead Minister, David develops the Spiritual Growth of Southside Uniting Church. Through preaching and teaching, pastoral care, leadership of groups, operational planning and personal example, David is a carrier and embedder of our new congregation's DNA.
Our Ministry Team includes Rachel Manton (Bottom Centre), SSUC Resource Manager who coordinates and manages many of the administrative and business aspects of our congregation. Rachel brings experience from corporate and legal sectors into our congregation, and as a former UCA Pastor and Trinity College Graduate; Rachel also brings a passion for ministry and God's Word into the administrative elements of our congregation.
Rev. David MacGregor (Top Centre) is Community Minister at SSUC in Tarragindi and he also oversees the Pastoral Care & Worship ministry area for SSUC. As a member of the Assembly Circle on Worship and active participant in the development of worship in the Australian Religious Sphere, through song and hymn writing and reviewing emerging worship trends. David brings some unique experiences and technical understanding to the development of worship life at SSUC, he works with the Community worship teams and leaders as well as the preachers in developing our calendar for worship and with the pastoral care teams at the communities.
Rev. Esteban Liévano (Top Right) is the Community Minister at SSUC in Mt Gravatt, as Outreach Minister he contributes to strategic direction and provides operational leadership to assist our Congregation and its members to reach out, locally, nationally and internationally to witness God’s love in word and deed. In this area, Esteban works with leaders in each of our communities to identify areas of community outreach that are relevant to each community. In some cases these will be in community activities such as S.A.G.E. and 3FS in Mt Gravatt and Holland Park, or the Men's Shed Ministry at Yeronga. Esteban also works with the SSUC Multicultural Community, such as the Brazilian Service at Mt Gravatt.
Rev. Jock Dunbar (Bottom Left) is Community Minister at SSUC in Holland Park and also serves SSUC in New Missions. This Ministry Area comes from the discernment of our communities in coming together, there was a desire to research and find new ways of doing mission in our region. Jock has had experience in Pioneering Ministry and is active in various areas of community engagement.

SSUC Holland Park is known in the local community for being an inclusive community, for their various hall hirers offering different services to the local community and for their church sign on Logan Road (one of South Brisbane's major roads) that offers messages of hope and grace on a regular basis. Originally St David's Presbyterian Church, on June 26, 1977 was dissolved when the church became part of the Uniting Church in Australia. The name was changed to Holland Park St David's Uniting Church. Following many years of ministry in the local area, in 2015 the communities of Holland Park Central Uniting and St David's combined to form Holland Park Uniting Church. The premises at 1012 Logan Road, Holland Park are still managed by members of this community. Holland Park discerned a future together in 2019, joining three other Uniting Church congregations to become Southside Uniting Church.

Before the formation of the Uniting Church in 1977, there was already a community at St. Mark's Mt Gravatt who was bringing together members of the Methodist and Presbyterian Churches in shared fellowship and mission to the local area. Since then, the Mt Gravatt Community has been engaging in the local community in various ways, most recently through the twice a year Mega Garage Sale (March and September) where funds support missional activities in Australia and the world. The Mt Gravatt Community has also proudly supported the work of Qld Community Alliance in advocating for the marginalised and community activism. Another ministry Mt Gravatt has supported over many years has been Brisbane 45th Boys and Girls Brigades. The Mt Gravatt community has also had a history of working with multicultural worship expression in our local area, previously hosting the Hungarian Pentecostal Church, and currently hosting Pyung Hwa Korean Presbyterian Chruch and our own Brazilian Service - Emergir.
In 2019, the congregation of St. Mark's Uniting Church discerned their missional future, that God was calling them to join with other churches in the area to become Southside Uniting Church.
